Turning theory into practice - a commitment to real-world learning

A liberal arts college dedicated to helping students discover the practical applications of their studies, OWU is committed to education that transforms theory into practice. In addition to the programs listed below, OWU offers internship opportunities near campus, across Ohio, and around the world. Some students develop entirely self-initiated projects that explore practical applications of their academic interests, and we enthusiastically support their efforts.

New York Arts Program A semester-long apprenticeship opportunity to work with established artists, writers, actors, and theatres in New York

Philadelphia Center An immersion learning experience in which students live and work on their own for an entire semester in bustling Philadelphia

Sarah Kenny '11

A music major and opera enthusiast, Sarah used a Theory-to-Practice Grant to attend an OWU Opera Workshop at Salzburg Music Festival in Salzburg, Austria. She and other participants took voice lessons from professional singers, attended opera performances, visited museums, and discovered the art, music, and culture of Austria.

Addie Hemmen, Perrie and Danielle Bonner '11

Combining interests in psychology, anthropology, and sociology, Addie, Perrie, and Danielle proposed a unique research project that was funded with an OWU Theory-to-Practice Grant. Traveling to India, they studied and wrote about the welfare of street children in Kolkata, India.

Sydney Parms '11

Sydney's longstanding interest in social justice led her to Romania to study the life and culture of the Roma, also known as gypsies. A history and sociology/anthropology major, Sydney's Theory-to-Practice Grant project, "Plight of the Roma: Romani Life, Culture, and Socioeconomic Status in Romania," was done in conjunction with an internship with social service organizations that work with the Roma population.

Katelyn Schroeder '11

Few places can compare with New York for anyone serious about being successful in the theatre. That's why Katelyn, a theatre and economic management major, took advantage of OWU's New York Arts Program to participate in a marketing internship at Vineland theatre, an off-Broadway theatre in New York.
